Does HILCO pay for the energy production from solar?

Yes. As of January 1, 2026, all new solar installations will be billed based on our Avoided Cost Buy-Back program. Under this program, HILCO credits members for the excess energy their systems produce back to the grid.

  • How Your Bill is Calculated
  • Your monthly statement is determined by two distinct flow rates:
  • Power Delivered by HILCO: Any electricity you pull from the grid to power your home (when your system isn't producing enough) is billed at our full retail rate.
  • Power Received by HILCO: Any excess generation, that is not used by you, then passes back through your meter onto HILCO’s system is credited at our avoided cost wholesale rate.

Understanding the Credits

  • Avoided Cost Rate: This rate is determined by the Co-op based on our standard wholesale energy costs and is subject to periodic adjustments.
  • Total Coverage: Unlike some programs, your overproduction credits are versatile. They can be applied to your entire bill to offset any charges, including facility charges, fees, and taxes.
  • Rollover Credits: If your solar credits exceed your total charges for the month, the remaining balance will carry forward to your next bill, ensuring you never lose the value of the energy you produced.
